Aaron Rai Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Versus Fellow Englishman Fleetwood

The 30-year-old golfer demonstrated exceptional nerve to secure the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff following a rollercoaster last day of play.

The Englishman nailed a crucial birdie putt from just over eight foot to seal the win, echoing his sole prior Rolex Series success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a play-off victory against the same opponent.

Sunday's Play Excitement

Rai entered the final round with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Nicolai Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a up-and-down, five-under final round that included seven birdies and two bogeys.

The challenger edged a stroke ahead with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the sixteenth, but his rival pulled level again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a ten-foot birdie putt to win outright on the last hole.

Playoff Decider

That set up a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to take the championship and $1.5m (£1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even better person. To play with him the final two rounds was really special,” said Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on your game and staying in the zone, it’s difficult to put into words at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”

Notable Contenders

Rory McIlroy left himself a bit too far to make up, coming up a stroke behind in a tie for third with Højgaard, after a stunning 62 closing round of ten-under. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, comprising eight birdies and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his chances of topping the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the twelfth. England’s Mansell produced an excellent final-round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
