Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Leadership Change
Summers announced he would retreat from public roles after Congressional panel released his repeated communications with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just days after a batch of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became publicly available.

The economist stated in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the promise of the organization, and look forward observing their development".

The former Harvard president, who formerly presided over the Ivy League institution, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The recently released emails demonstrated that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of the financier's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.

In a separate statement, the technology organization stated it respected the economist's decision to depart.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the perspective he brought to the Board," OpenAI stated.

Congressional Action

This development follows after the two houses of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to pass a legislation that would mandate the US justice department to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The bill will afterward move to the desk of US President Donald Trump for signature. He has said he plans to approve the bill, after modifying his position on the matter following pressure from his supporters.

Email Contents

A batch of financier-linked emails made public by the legislative panel recently included numerous well-known personalities in the Epstein's past associates, without indicating any illegal behavior by those figures.

The messages indicated that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with he often seeking to link Summers to notable global figures.

Personal Response

After the messages were released with the wider community, Summers said he accepted "full responsibility for my poor judgment to continue communicating with the financier".

He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish faith and mend relationships with the individuals most important to me".

Previous Positions

Summers held senior posts under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as head of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led Harvard from the early 2000s and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public duties earlier on this week, he indicated he would persist with his teaching commitments.

Further Repercussions

Following the economist's statement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal research organization in the capital where the professor was a researcher, announced that Summers was ceased to be connected with the organization.

He became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which develops ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its CEO OpenAI's head.
