Thomas Tuchel Seeks Bellingham's Passion So Long As England's Ace Sets Aside His Ego Outside.

A single omission was enough. Another and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to realize that securing World Cup glory demands contributions by the talented midfielder, although it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to adapt to the game plans and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is back in Tuchel's welcoming fold.

The manager wants Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is a matter of channeling it appropriately. Individual quality is important but England know from bitter experience that there is a cost when celebrity takes over. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.

Bellingham had much to ponder after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed England book their place at the upcoming World Cup in his absence. He saw the young talent excel as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel mention appreciating the team's dynamism and values. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in winning fashion, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus Barcelona and Juventus. His selection was inevitable; leaving him out again would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.

The expectation is that Tuchel will have a midfielder focused on frightening rivals rather than teammates. Ultimately, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has demonstrated that representing the national team is a valuable, uncertain thing. The coach, on his side, can now offer support around the youngster after demonstrating that he is not afraid to take tough decisions.

“No issue exists regarding him, there is no problem with the character,” the German commented. “Bellingham just has that aggression. You need a sharp mentality to reach the heights that he has. Everyone need to help him and create an environment where he can channel that intensity against rivals and in pursuit of success we are building as a team.”

The star took up most of the attention at Tuchel’s squad announcement for this month’s meaningless matches versus one opponent and Albania. Who else? Indeed, what about Phil Foden? This is a further gifted playmaker who needs support and direction. He has been absent for England since March and has found it hard to perform well this year but the boss was impressed by the 25-year-old after his performance in the Champions League match versus Borussia Dortmund recently.

The issue, however, is the best way to deploy the attacking talents at England’s disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to select another youngster once he recovers from a persistent groin problem. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's influence in the process.

It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it disrupts the attacking balance. There is room for a single playmaker, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles is beneficial. He is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. There will also be no wide role for Foden, who has to be central. The coach prefers him near Kane. “It is illogical to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, can you play the left side? Can you play right wing?” he said. “Phil is to feature in the central attacking zone, through the center. I've long had this vision about him for years. In my view it suits him best.”

He conceded there are occasions when the player has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel as if, ‘Does he like it?’ And a player like him who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's his role, the environment, I don’t know.

“In my opinion he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a specific system, to have a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions am I to receive the ball? Where am I supposed to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?

The manager mentioned one star bursting through for easy finishes and the other netting strikes from outside the box. He said he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, Myles Lewis-Skelly, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his fine form for City at left-back. Interest is high.

The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, he suggested deploying Foden as a false 9 against one opponent or Albania. Anthony Gordon, the United forward, Bellingham and the winger are alternatives if he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is a moment for a little experimentation.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to develop Kane’s relationship with Bellingham flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter assisting Kane to net in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the sole instance in 35 games for England when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other once during England’s draws with one opponent and another at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.

“At this point eventually it falls to the responsibility of the players,” he stated. He is not afraid to speak frankly. There is still a sense of Bellingham having to prove himself. He may not be guaranteed to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants Bellingham onside but he will be observing him carefully. Set aside the ego at the door. It will make a powerful squad into an superior one.
